GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms Secures Order From Aselsan For Rugged Signal Processor Subsystem

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA   May 12, 2009   GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms, a unit of GE Enterprise Solutions, today announced that it had secured an order worth $1.1 million from prime contractor Aselsan for a complete rugged signal processor subsystem to be included in a Synthetic Aperture Radio (SAR) system for the Turkish Armed Forces.

The GE Fanuc solution which includes the GE Fanuc DSP230 VPX multiprocessor computer and XMCV5 VPX FPGA-based processor, was chosen by Aselsan for its ability to process significant quantities of information in close to real-time in a harsh environment. The combined requirement for high bandwidth processing and rugged reliability made VPX the architecture of choice. Immediate availability of the DSP230 and XMCV5 is allowing Aselsan to begin prototyping, testing and validating the solution immediately, enabling the company to meet the demanding timeframes that are vital to putting the SAR into production.

The goal of VPX is to bring rugged defense computing into the era of serial switch fabric backplanes, while preserving many of the features which made VME successful,” said Peter Cavill, General Manager, Military & Aerospace Products at GE Fanuc Intelligent Platforms. “GE Fanuc’s leadership in systems based on this industry standard architecture and in technologies such as multi-core processors and FPGA were clearly a key factor in our ability to secure this project,”

The GE Fanuc rugged 6U VPX DSP230 multiprocessor is based on four Freescale™ 8641D dual core processor nodes, and includes both a Serial RapidIO switch and a Gen-2 PCI Express™ switch to all nodes. A Gigabit Ethernet switch is also provided to all four nodes, as well as to the backplane and, in the case of air-cooled versions, to the front panel. Flexibility is further enhanced by the provision a PCI-X® PMC/XMC site. The DSP230 is fully supported by GE Fanuc’s industry-leading AXIS Advanced Multiprocessor Integrated Software tools and libraries, and is a building block within GE Fanuc’s new AXIS MultiComputer family, providing a range of multiprocessor configurations with the flexibility to integrate system specific I/O that caters to legacy as well as future requirements.

The XMCV5 is a rugged XMC that harnesses the power and flexibility of the Xilinx® Virtex™-5 family of FPGAs to address the complete range of performance requirements for demanding defense and aerospace applications. Designed for use in harsh environments where extended temperature, shock and vibration are the norm, the XMCV5 provides the flexibility and compute power to cater for a range of deployed applications. It is typically chosen by system architects when configurable co-processing is required to complement GE Fanuc’s range of PowerPC or Intel® architecture SBCs and AXIS Multiprocessors. Applications ranging from signal and image processing, fast data I/O and networked processing are all within reach with this leading edge solution.
